BAY AREA BLOG SOCIETY (BABS)

BABS is:

A group of bloggers and blog-interested fellows, located for the most part (but by no means exclusively) in the San Francisco Bay area.

Blog-interested fellows include voice actors to record material for audio, website owners, and individuals in all industries peripheral to blogging.

BABS exists to:

Further the access of blog content to the sight-impaired community. BABS supports its members in creating audio versions of blogs, creating a readily available bank of material for the sight-impaired, and educating the Internet-using public on tools to make websites more useful to the sight-impaired.

Support the art of blogging as a valued cultural experiment and a moment in the evolution of human communication. Support is offered in the form of association classes, events, and gatherings where members learn and teach technology, content, and responsible practices in blogging.

Objectives of BABS are to:
Develop an online center for high-quality audio versions of existing blog material – called “Speakies.”
Create online guide to teach web standards for sight-impaired access and ADA compliance.
Meet locally for mutual support of blog development, and fostering relationships
Hold an annual conference for BABS

Initial Tasks for BABS:
Hold first member meeting in July 2008.
Announce formation of Society to the Press
Invite and inform members
Create a central website for the association
Begin regularly scheduled gatherings
Start a schedule of classes
Discuss ideas for the first BABS conference

Long-range objectives of BABS are to:
Seed blog societies in other regions

You are welcome to become a member of BABS, enjoy our online guides, and participate in the online center of “Speakies.” You will receive a guide which outlines the protocol for turning your valuable blog content into high-quality audio for the sight-impaired.

As BABS develops, those of you who are out-of-region members may become inspired to start your own regional Blog Society. This is a long-range objective of BABS, and we encourage you to use this Society as your template.
