SPEAKIES F.A.Q.

A “Speakie” is a spoken blog, recorded by the blogger or other human voice, and stored as a retrievable audio file to be easily accessed by sight-impaired Internet users.

Q. How is a Speakie different from a podcast or audiocast?

A: The term Speakie is meant to describe a written blog which is turned into an audio file, and posted on the online center for spoken blogs operated by Bay Area Blog Society. Podcasts are often recorded as Podcasts, which is a different medium at the writing stage. Podcasts are more like radio, while Speakies start out as written blogs.

Speakies may also include comments which have been added to particular blogs. This can further enhance the experience of the sight-impaired who may not be able to read comments due to technological obstacles.

Q: Who is creating Speakies?
A: BABS promotes the recording of valuable blog content and conversational threads for the sight-impaired to access and use, becoming a more informed participant in the online world. BABS teaches easy ways to get important blog material into Speakies at their monthly meetings.

Q: Why do bloggers want to create Speakies?
A: Audio content is highly valuable property for blogs, increasing readership and linking. Besides being a public service, having your blog appear – or be heard, rather – on a website that is frequented by a large demographic is an excellent way to increase visits to your own site.

Q: Where can I learn more about this?
A: The online center for spoken blogs can be found soon, under Speakies on the Bay Area Blog Society website.
